Off The Campaign Trail And Onto The Happy Hunting Trail For One Congress Hopeful, And: Pearce Gets Pushback Over Constant Virus Hits On MLG

Claire Chase
She failed to take the southern congressional prize, getting defeated in the June GOP primary by Yvette Herrell who went on to unseat Dem Rep. Xochitl Torres Small, but Claire Chase may have won first prize in the elk hunting awards. The happy hunter posted this post-election pic on social media and drew raves from her fans.

For Chase, a grad of NM Military Institute and wife of Mack Energy Vice-President Chance Chase of the Artesia oil family, there is clearly life after politics. And at only 37 don't be surprised to hear from her again. As for her hunting party, it appeared to be a gal pal outing. That wouldn't be unusual for the southern women congressional club. During the campaign a Torres Small ad showed her walking away with a gun and holding a dead turkey at her side. Herrell also joined the gun club with her own TV ads as she fired away on the target range.

For now the election is over and everyone is holding their fire--except perhaps when exploring the badlands of New Mexico for their next hunting trophy.

PUSHING BACK PEARCE

While Chase takes a political breather, NM GOP Chairman Steve Pearce is still breathing fire. Rarely a week or even a day goes by when the GOP chair doesn't blast Gov. MLG, the woman who soundly defeated him in the 2018 gubernatorial race. He ramped up the criticism this week, faulting MLG for her handling of the virus pandemic. His comments quoted here had readers scrambling to their email to come with a counter-blast to the hard-charging chairman. Kelley Vigil was one:

Had we a Steve Pearce during this pandemic I’m sure we’d have a very different picture, a lot of sick, dead people. I shun the thought. MLG is not my favorite person, but I think she’s doing the best she can given the pandemic. Surely not at all what she envisioned being NM Governor would be. Sucks to be her. And, some men can’t handle strong, unafraid women. Steve Pearce appears to be one of those, especially one that beat him at the ballot box. He demonstrates every time he opens his mouth the personal nature of his attacks. Maybe he feels better as the “little” man he is.

Reader JG followed suit:

Steve Pearce is long on criticism, and short on solutions. How would Governor Pearce have tackled Covid19? Invite him to submit his plan for your readers’ scrutiny. And don’t let him get away with, “it’s too late now because of MLG’s mistakes.” What is his plan to bring Covid19 under control? Which schools would he open? Which restaurants? Would he mandate masks – yes or no? Would he mandate vaccinations – yes or no?

Even as nearly 1,600 New Mexicans died from the virus there have been few moments of bipartisanship over the outbreak. If it would do any good, we'd say it didn't used to be that way.

This is the home of New Mexico politics.
